THE STEAMBOAT:
The Clermont
THESIS:
The steamboat greatly increased the efficiency of river navigation and was a major turning point in U.S. transportation, commerce, and westward expansion. Before the 19th century, transportation was highly inefficient. The steamboat was therefore developed, allowing rivers to transform into the highways of America. The era of steamboats began with the introduction of Robert Fulton's Clermont in 1807 and continued throughout the 1800's and early 1900's. |
